When Considering Stocks, Remember We'll Always Need Toilet Paper

This is not about a new use for stock certificates, although some I've owned would qualify.

I want you to consider whether defensive stocks are appropriate for your portfolio.

A defensive stock is one that represents industry sectors that are not high growth or high tech, but rather those parts of our economy that provide essential products or services.

Toilet paper is an example, although I am not advocating investing in paper companies.

Utilities that provide basic power, water and/or sewer services are another example. Food and energy companies are also examples of defensive stocks.

Why would you want to invest in defensive stocks?

Defensive stocks tend to do better in tough economic times because demand does not drop as dramatically as it might for more discretionary items, such as electronics or vehicles.

Of course, when the economy begins growing, defensive stocks usually don't grow as fast as other sectors.

People don't buy substantially more food when the economy is booming. Their energy use may rise some, but usually not as fast as the rest of the market.

The tendency of defensive stocks to neither fall nor rise dramatically is why you should consider them for part of your portfolio.

They can provide a buffer from dramatic swings (up and down) in other parts of your portfolio.

Besides, if managed to corner the market in toilet paper, you would be in a position of some strength. (Imagine controlling the price of toilet paper.)

Buying A Car - What Is The Best Finance?

Your car is one of the most expensive purchases you will ever make. Probably the only thing you will buy that costs more than your car is your house. You wouldn't just accept the first mortgage you came across, and likewise you shouldn't just accept the first vehicle financing option that comes your way. You will have a lot of options in how to finance your car.

You can buy the car outright. If you would like to opt for this, you will need to borrow the cash in the form of a bank loan.

This should generally be medium term, over period of about two to five years. It is generally not advised that you secure borrowing over your home but this may be necessary in order to get the loan or in order to get a better rate. Shop around for the best rate, from banks, other lenders and also on the internet. Rates will vary widely so it is a good idea to shop around as much as possible.

Leasing

If buying the car outright in this manner is not an option, you may wish to consider leasing the car. Leasing will never make you the owner of the car. You pay a monthly fee, every month for the period of the lease, and at the end of this period, you give back the car and walk away. Leases have a number of advantages over buying the vehicle. The payments are generally lower as you are not paying for the entire value, just for the price of leasing it.

You also don't have to worry about selling the car when the leasing period is over, as the dealer owns it. Leases may also include a buying option at the end of the period, which will allow you to buy the car if you want to. The one thing to be careful about when leasing is that there may be heavy penalties for early termination.

Some Advantages

The other popular type of vehicle financing is dealership financing. With this option, the car dealer arranges the car financing. They will sometimes offer very attractive rates as they want to encourage people to buy the cars, however, sometimes their rates are extremely bad and you will want to be familiar with what's available from alternative sources before opting for dealership financing. Some advantages of dealership financing will include convenience, multiple options, and special offers on selected models.

Patience, Decisiveness, and Calmness

The idea of making a living as a day trader appeals to a large number of people, but not everybody has a personality suitable for day trading. Even people that are successful in other fields (even related fields), often find that they are not compatible with day trading. Day trading is a flexible profession (meaning that it can be adapted to suit different styles), but there are a few qualities that all day traders need to have in their personalities, in order to be successful (profitable), and avoid becoming a nervous wreck in the process.

Patience

When non traders imagine day traders, many people think of traders in a trading pit, wearing brightly colored jackets, shouting and waving their arms about. While this may have been true once, it is no longer an accurate image of day trading. Modern day trading is performed by sitting quietly in front of a computer, waiting anywhere from a few minutes, to several hours, or even days, for the next trade to come along. Being able to wait patiently is a necessity, otherwise you will find yourself taking trades that are not part of your trading system (known as making up a trade), and most likely losing money on them. Waiting patiently does not necessarily mean doing nothing, and there are many things that you can do while you are waiting for your next trade. Some day traders join live trading rooms where they can interact with other traders, some traders play computer games and watch movies, and many day traders eat their meals while they are trading (breakfast often coincides nicely with the market open).

Decisiveness

Deciding when to enter and exit trades is one of the most basic functions of a day trader, and it is important that these decisions are made as efficiently as possible. Being decisive is vital to successful day trading, otherwise you will only sit and watch trades that you should have actually taken. Being decisive does not mean being rash, and taking trades that you are not sure about, but it does mean acting promptly when a trade does come along. A common pitfall that many beginning day traders come across is seeing a trade occuring, but hesitating and waiting for the trade to start moving into profit before entering (waiting for confirmation that the trade is going to be a winning trade before they enter it). This always results in an entry price that is not as good as it would have been with a prompt entry, and can turn a winning trade into a losing trade.

Calmness

Remaining calm during trading is one of the most important personality traits for a day trader, but it is also one of the most difficult to obtain and practice. As humans, the natural reactions to a winning trade are excitement and joy, and the natural reactions to a losing trade are panic and sadness, but day traders need to control these emotions, otherwise they will adversely affect their trading decisions (particularly the negative emotions). For example, the panic that occurs after a losing trade might make you take a new trade almost immediately in an attempt to make the money back, even though there was no trade according to your trading system.

Trading in Simulation

Trading in simulation is a good way to practice your patience, decisiveness, and calmness during trading, without risking any real money. After many hours, days, or weeks of simulation, you will have a good idea of how your personality and your emotions will affect your day trading, but even then, there will still be an emotional response when you start trading live.
